The Kadare House Studio - Kadare Shtëpia Studio.

A first glance inside the apartment where Ismail Kadare lived from 1974 to 1990 is possible through an ‘embrasure’ whose shape recalls the archaic gazes from Albanian towers, geometries of absolute silence, defended by rare ‘lines’ opened for the use of rifles. The modern ‘embrasure’ reveals the mystery of the most famous of contemporary Albanian writers, opening toward the most secluded part of his studio: the niche containing his books, gathered around the ‘bourgeois’ fire-place next to which where he would write every morning. […] The house-museum devised by Elisabetta Terragni begins with the two daytime rooms enveloped in the contrast between the neutral colours of the wallpaper and the dark colour of the wooden furniture, separated by a wide glazed wall that hides one of the mysteries of the house: the substitution with glass of the wall envisaged in the original project which proved ‘fatal’ for the architect Maks Velo and was used by the prosecution as evidence for his conviction. […] The Kadare House Studio is a place full of contrasts. An ordinary apartment, at a first glance, in an extraordinary city, the capital of the most isolated dictatorship in Cold War Europe, which is now open to visitors almost thirty years after being abandoned. The sequence of silent rooms that speak to us in the black and white of writing narrate the contrasts of this place. A place that is as unique and mysterious as its inhabitant.
