ENGADINE HOUSE
A vacation apartment in the Engadine Valley occupies 90 sq. m. of a third floor added on top of an 18th-century farmhouse in Samedan. Located in one of the most picturesque spots, every effort was made to avoid cute imitation of local construction which typically employs deeply recessed windows in the facades and wainscoting for the main living room. By converting the funnel-shaped windows to inside jambs and by lining all wall surfaces with fragrant larchwood, Engadine traditions won a new lease of life precisely because they were put to inventive rather than imitative use.
A school of carpentry in Samedan assured exacting execution, producing perfect continuity of the wood grain across all surfaces and a match for sliding doors, drawers, and cupboards. Every room is treated like a large piece of furniture, slightly rotated in plan, with a variety of spatial recesses offering convenience and surprise.
